Fuji X-Pro1 firmware version 2.0 focus comparison

Okay guys I’ve just updated my X-Pro1 firmware to version 2.0 and, although there are many improvements, the one we all care about the most is focus performance. To that end I have made a little comparison video which shows clearly an improvement in speed, although I would say the Fuji still struggles with anything other than strong contrast.

Perhaps most interesting is that they have also performed the rather dirty trick of making the camera beep before the focus action is complete, which improves the perceived focus times. You can see this for yourself on the video and this really underlines the challenge Fuji has with the slow mechanics of these original XF lenses. A bit disappointing but if you’re committed to the X-Pro1 as a system this firmware update should make you very happy.

In terms of operation, the lens still sounds like a rotating tank gun – I think we’re stuck with this but the linear focus motor of the new lenses should be quieter. The lens used in the video is the 35mm f1.4.

There doesn’t appear to be any improvement in the speed/refresh rate of the live view though EVF or LCD.

I apologise for the poor production quality on this video but I really was in a bit of a hurry. Will update the post later with any other thoughts on the update. The subject was not really backlit as it appears on the video – the room was bathed in bright sunlight from all sides.

Update: manual focus is much improved – the live view now updates instantly as you rotate the focus ring. The 100 per cent zoomed focus assist mode is now very useable.

I’m pretty happy! It’s actually about as good as my 5D2 was, which was okay at best, but I got by. What’s great is that in a tough situation the manual is totally useful! And even more useful than on my 5D because I can easily focus at zoomed in which is clutch when wide open, and back lit. The sound doesn’t bother me too much, you’ll never hear it in the wild. It’s faster to focus than I am with a real rangefinder, which is what I expect of AF.

Hi Mark, I think you’re right … especially in the case of manual focus which seems completely fixed now as far as I’m concerned. Autofocus now much snappier, though as I primarily use EVF I’d love a smoother refresh rate – I expect the X-E1 may deliver on that front although it’s the same sensor and processor so what’s possible for one ought to be possible for the other.
