Shooting in Paris: Day Three

23 Sep
September 23, 2012

Thanks to some truly awful weather in London today, I’m almost done with the Paris pics. There is a ‘day 4′, but they’re mostly personal travel snaps that I won’t publish here. Read more →

Doing some maintenance – apologies for RSS spam

23 Sep
September 23, 2012

Hi guys – I’m plugging the reviews and photo walks on my old website into the categories on my new one, and in the case of the photo walks moving the entire posts across. In both cases this is unfortunately resulting in a fresh RSS feed entry. Bear with me – spamming and repetition aren’t my style!

Fuji X-Pro1 firmware version 2.0 focus comparison

18 Sep
September 18, 2012

Okay guys I’ve just updated my X-Pro1 firmware to version 2.0 and, although there are many improvements, the one we all care about the most is focus performance. To that end I have made a little comparison video which shows clearly an improvement in speed, although I would say the Fuji still struggles with anything other than strong contrast.

Camera overload at Photokina

17 Sep
September 17, 2012

There’s a lot coming out of the Photokina conference today. Unfortunately I have a day job so I suggest you head over to The Verge, my favourite tech website, for highlights. The most exciting thing is the Panasonic GH3 for sure, though at that price you’d have to be already invested in micro four thirds.

Also, Google has bought Nik Software, which makes Silver Efex Pro – the best black and white processing software out there. Oh and Canon has launched some kind of photography social media hub in addition to the full-frame 6D camera. And there’s a Leica launch later. Okay that’s it – go forth and gorge yourselves.

Shooting in Paris: Day Two

16 Sep
September 16, 2012

After trudging round Paris all afternoon and evening with a tripod on my back and failing to use it even once, I decided to give it a miss on day two. This was, of course, a mistake. Read more →

Welcome back, RSS readers

15 Sep
September 15, 2012

Last night I discovered that when I moved this blog in July I broke the RSS feed url before I put the post up telling people about the move and directing them to the new one. Oops.

I’ve now put a permanent redirect on the server so subscribers from before July should be getting updates again – apologies if these landed all at once.

If you’re new to my blog, you can subscribe using the buttons to the right of this post.

So about the Nikon D600 …

14 Sep
September 14, 2012

The Nikon D600 is a hell of a camera. When the D7000 was released in September 2010 many people said: ‘If I could have that camera with a full-frame sensor …’ and now we have it. Consumer size, weight and and features with full-frame sensor quality that will probably beat the D800 in all areas bar resolution.

Problem is, the D7000 came out in September 2010. It’s now September 2012. Nikon is to be saluted for listening to its customers, but frankly it’s too little too late. Read more →

Shooting in Paris: Day One

13 Sep
September 13, 2012

Day one of shooting in Paris and we had to get a bit of the standard sightseeing out of the way. Unfortunately that meant huge, imperial avenues and not a lot of original material in the architecture department. Eiffel Tower, anyone? Read more →

Sony RX1 versus Fuji X100: Street shooter showdown

12 Sep
September 12, 2012

This morning Sony announced the RX1 full-frame compact camera with a fixed Zeiss lens. Having held (update: owned) a Leica and felt how bulky and heavy it is, I’m gonna say the Sony RX1 is the world’s first full-frame compact camera. Read more →

Paris Preview

09 Sep
September 9, 2012

This is the first frame from four days in Paris last weekend. I had every intention of cranking through the rest today but it’s just too darn sunny out there to be stuck inside glued to Lightroom. Sorry Paris, you’ll have to wait. Read more →
